Ambitious talk and wry ironies heard in distant news

In reports from Jones’s Wood and beyond, Capt Meagher rouses Irish crowds but opposes martial law while Washington weighs its timing. Arkansas boasts 21 500 soldiers, a third of its largest vote yet, as Boston port official Phelps faces removal. A Swedish king and a French capital parade echo political foibles amid imperial wanderings and a humorous anecdote of a former Ham prisoner now tobacconist.
