A baby carriage slipped from Mrs. Catherine J. Hogarty into Jamaica Pond yesterday afternoon. The mother 27 year old of 16 Hall Street Jamaica Plain and an unknown man were drowned. A passing girl saved the baby girl Annie. Marie aged 13 months perished with her mother.
In Jamaica Plain a breeze toppled a carriage carrying a sleeping infant. Mrs Hogarty shouted then leaped after the rolling vehicle and hurled herself toward the carriage, tossing the child to safety as the cart moved toward the water. Margaret Levin stood nearby with a relative as the danger unfolded.
A carriage struck gravel, tipped over, and sent a child into a pond. Mrs Hogarty plunged in and rescued Marie, lifting her to shore as Miss Levin cried out and Miss Martha Daly aided. Continued on Page 2 Fifth Column.
In Poland Maine Forrest L Havey found a pocket of tourmalines after a dynamite blast worth about 50 000 to 60 000 dollars. He mined the field for ten years and many pockets are now being sought by neighbors hoping to strike similar wealth. Many stones range from 10 to 50 carats with some as large as a finger.
L F Vosburgh named general passenger agent of the New York Central West Shore and Boston and Albany railroads effective September 1, succeeding Gerritt Fort who has resigned.
Between 200 and 300 spectators saw Horace F. Kearny attempt a flight in his Pfitzner monoplane on Harvard Field in Squantur. The first lift occurred but the second practice run ended in disaster as the machine failed during its run.
The aircraft suffered wing wire failure when hitting a rut at about 30 mph, forcing a pause for repairs. Permission to fly again at o'clock this morning was granted by Charles J. Glidden and Carl A. A cablegram from Kiel to Harvard College Observatory reports D Arrest's comet observed by M F Gonnessiat at Algiers on August 26, 8892 GMT. The comet's position was right ascension 16h 48m a nd declination 9° 42' 50" and it was visible in a large telescope.
A runaway horse pulling a lumber load on Main Street in Brockton struck W. Scott Flanders of 52 Hardy Avenue Campello and crushed him against a telephone pole. He is not expected to live.
