Letter Debate Over Henry Wilson and Know Nothing Ties

Boston August 29. A correspondent questions Henry Wilson about alleged Know Nothing ties. The letter argues Wilson signed a 1850s Know Nothing pledge and insists the real issue is whether he belonged to the Know Nothing or American party. The report notes California trade centering in New York with few Boston vessels loaded this year. Since August 10 no ship remains at the Boston berth while several Boston ships load in New York for California, prompting calls to restore Boston’s share of the business.

Lighthouse fog whistle at Seguin Light and bell boat near Humboldt Bay

The Lighthouse Board reports a ten inch steam fog whistle installed at Seguin Light Station on Seguin Island near the Kennebec River coast of Maine. In foggy weather signals sound every 52 seconds with eight second blasts, machinery placed 140 feet above sea level. A bell boat is moored in 16 fathoms at the bar entrance to Humboldt Bay California, audible up to three quarters of a mile depending on wind and sea.

Maritime Trades and Accidents Spill From August 1880 Nautical Briefs

In Tuesday night collision near Cape Cod the steamer Thetis and the schooner Ella H Barnes sustained minor damage while the Doris towed the Barnes to Warwick Neck. The M A Folsom capsized after a squall near Cape Cod with the mate entangled and saved. the Franconia attempted rescue. Other ships reported incidents include the James Stephenson burned off Lisbon, the Bessie Rogers being raised, and various dockside mishaps at Norfolk and Georgetown.
