Aimed at averting a hotel strike the President readies a message urging swift action. Wilson, the hotel murder case figure, eludes police as inquiries intensify and calls for federal aid rise.

At Block Island Illinois on August 28 a four story Hygeia Hotel burned with 175 people escaping in night clothing. Firemen and volunteers battled the blaze to save adjacent cottages as the hotel was destroyed.
The Hygeia, owned by J. C. Champlain and valued around 75000 dollars, burned after a fire started in the cupola for unknown reasons. The blaze spread to the roof as passersby noticed flames. About 100 guests and 75 employees were unable to save belongings.
Charles E. Hughes outlined a campaign schedule visiting New Hampshire and Maine from Sept. 7 to 9 with speeches at Hampton Beach Portsmouth York Harbor Lewiston Waterville Bangor Augusta Brunswick Rockland and a Boston stop on Sept. 10 before opening New York State campaigning at Syracuse.
In Boston 20 frightened guests and staff witnessed the shooting of Charles W Cranney a leading head waiter at the Hotel Essex He was directing service in the second floor dining room when an armed discharged employee Stell Zackareke entered fired five shots reloaded and fled by a rear stairway Police issued a general alarm for the suspect.
Zackareke, a quarrelsome veteran waiter, shot Charles W. Cranney head waiter at the Essex after entering the dining room with a revolver. Cranney, 47, recently married, died as Zackareke fled. Cranney had been warned about the attacker. Police describe Zackareke as 49, 5 feet 7 inches, nervous, pale, and wearing a dark blue suit.
Mrs Mary Manji aged 28 of 49 English Street Peabody was shot and killed by her husband Daniel Manji aged 30 at their home yesterday afternoon after she told him she loved another man.
Manji fled to ward Salem but was captured about 15 minutes later by Chief Michael H. Grady and Patrolman Thomas Grady. He confessed to shooting his wife four times after discovering her alleged lover in their boarding house on English Street. Neighbors reported the incident as excitement swept the district. Medical Examiner Horace K. Foster listed the death.
In Corralitos near the Durango line General Domingo Arrieta’s forces captured 18 Villa followers. They were immediately tried by drumhead court-martial and shot. Ferniza’s body was found among the rebels and hung in Matamoros plaza to deter Villa sympathizers.
Legal battle over the Boston and Maine railroad receivership intensifies in federal court. Insiders predict a dramatic unfolding of high finance rivalries in New England railroading as the case proceeds.

Joseph Cohen, 22, of 540 Clifford Street Roxbury, chased by Patrolman Sullivan after leaving Parker House Chaplin Place through School and Province streets. Cohen arrested on theft charge. Police say he entered Room K through an unlocked window and stole four women’s black leather bags valued at 16 dollars from H Margolin & Co New York. Two accomplices fled. descriptions reported.
Funeral services for James H. Lake of 128 Clinton road Brookline who died suddenly Sunday at his residence will be held at Forest Hills Cemetery Chapel this afternoon at 3 30 o clock He was a well known figure in Boston insurance circles and was 59 years old He was born in Rockford Illinois.

Firestone accompanies him as Henry Ford is expected to join later at Roxbury and Port Jervis. The three week journey includes letters and camping gear aboard a motor truck and a touring car, with brief stops noted at Milford and near Anthony Kuser.
