At Block Island Illinois on August 28 a four story Hygeia Hotel burned with 175 people escaping in night clothing. Firemen and volunteers battled the blaze to save adjacent cottages as the hotel was destroyed.

Murderer Attacks Head Waiter in Essex Hotel Shooting

Zackareke, a quarrelsome veteran waiter, shot Charles W. Cranney head waiter at the Essex after entering the dining room with a revolver. Cranney, 47, recently married, died as Zackareke fled. Cranney had been warned about the attacker. Police describe Zackareke as 49, 5 feet 7 inches, nervous, pale, and wearing a dark blue suit.

Mrs Mary Manji aged 28 of 49 English Street Peabody was shot and killed by her husband Daniel Manji aged 30 at their home yesterday afternoon after she told him she loved another man.

Salem Woman Shot by Jealous Husband in Domestic Tragedy

Manji fled to ward Salem but was captured about 15 minutes later by Chief Michael H. Grady and Patrolman Thomas Grady. He confessed to shooting his wife four times after discovering her alleged lover in their boarding house on English Street. Neighbors reported the incident as excitement swept the district. Medical Examiner Horace K. Foster listed the death.

18 Villistas Are Tried Then Hung
