A fierce Charleston storm left seven dead, many injured, and over one million dollars in property damage. Sullivan's Island residents were safely evacuated by ferry Lawrence, while Charleston Harbor lay strewn with wrecked boats and destroyed piers.
Directors of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company of Manchester New Hampshire announced in Boston plans to reorganize the corporation to allow employees to become stockholders. The proposal would raise capital stock from 5 760 000 to 28 300 000 with existing stock trading around 325 per share and a 12 dividend on par value 100.
The plan proposes issuing two shares of 4 1 2 percent cumulative preferred and three shares of common stock for each present share to entice officials and mill workers to become holders. The Amoskeag Manufacturing Company would reorganize by conveying all property to a voluntary association retaining the same name. Current directors are to stay on the board.
A severe storm battered the city with eight foot tides and over two inches of rain. Principal buildings including the Customs House and post office suffered damage while rail and utility services failed. The Southern Railway expects schedules to resume tomorrow but mail trains were halted. One fatality was reported as engineer Alonzo Coburn was killed by flying timbers. Paul D Beattie cousin of Henry Clay Beattie Jr testified at Chesterfield Court House that the accused bought the gun for Henry Beattie 24 hours after the murder and expressed regret he had done it. Beattie described pressure from family and duty to city prompting his testimony.
In the tense courtroom scene Paul Beattie recalls Henry saying he regretted actions tied to a marriage for money. Beattie reports Henry's claim that the woman never loved him and that he would not have done it for a million dollars. He adds Henry wanted him to stand by him but warned of trouble.
West Arichat N S Aug 28 Mrs Clarence Glovers arrival on the steamer Percy Cann surprised residents. Dressed in mourning she landed first with two companions, including her brother William. The crowd welcomed her and her reception suggests the murder trial did not change local opinion.

At the Harvard Boston aero meet the second day showcased Lincoln Beachey’s Curtiss biplane in a 40 mile wind and Harry N Atwood’s replica Burgess Wright flight. A bronze Goddess of Flight statue was presented to Atwood by Everts J Wendell as crowds cheered and Atwood was paraded on the field.
The Rev. Mariano Balcell S. J. at Carney Hospital in Boston is reported dying after a week with heart trouble. A Spaniard born in Tarragona, he lived at Boston College while studying astro physics at MIT and served two years in the Spanish artillery. He is about 42 and came from St. Andrew on the Hudson Jesuit headquarters, Poughkeepsie. He fell ill ten days ago and his condition worsened to hourly death.
Colonel John Jacob Astor's yacht Noma anchored in Newport harbor after a short visit to Beechwood. Astor his fiancee Miss Madeleine Force and party toured in an automobile then sailed for New York at nine. He plans to return to Newport later in the week.

Joseph Jefferson III, grandson of Joseph Jefferson of Rip Van Winkle fame and son of Thomas Jefferson, died yesterday morning at the family summer home in Buzzard's Bay. He was 22 and believed to have died from epilepsy.
Lucy Lee Swope niece of Colonel Thomas H. Swope, once a key witness in Dr. B C Hyde’s murder trial, elopes with W B Byrne and marries in Pueblo before returning to Colorado Springs. Hyde’s next trial is set for October with Mrs Byrne expected to testify.
H Godfrey aged 55 of 1 Granta terrace Quincy fell through a ll of the gigantic dreadney Rivadavia at Fore River injuring a dislocated shoulder and two broken ribs. He formerly worked as a shipwright at Fore River shipyards and supervised the launching of the Rivadavia.
The Boston Light 2500 race was postponed to today as high gusts made conditions hazardous. Beachey and the Curtis party protested, threatening to leave, while Beachey attempted a speed altitude run breaking a record in seven minutes.
Edward Bennett a Oxford graduate living in South Thomaston Maine murdered his three children aged 6 4 and 2 with chloroform and cyanide then killed himself by cyanide at the water edge his wife had died three weeks earlier and the housekeeper Mrs Thurlow had been caring for the children. Bennett's body was found 200 feet offshore as the tide receded.
