In Franconia New Hampshire the town selectmen rename Haystack Mountain the Mount Garfield to honor President James A Garfield. The peak near Mount Lafayette rises about 4500 feet and was previously known as Moose Mountain and Great Haystack in earlier eras.
In Quincy Illinois August 28 the Daily Herald editor praised Guiteau as honorable and downplayed the shooting provoking indignation among Democrats and Republicans. A demonstration burned the editor in effigy with a Guiteau effigy, though no violence was intended.
