Articles of agreement were signed Monday for a one mile skimming match between Prof. Thomas Riley and W. H. Beckwith at a $200 side stake. The event will be held off Hotel Pemberton Thursday evening around 6 PM. The Boston and Hingham Steamboat company adds a $100 purse for the winner. A Jesustown special reports John Minaban died this afternoon after a Saturday night shooting by Policeman Michael Smith. Smith, who had been drinking, tried to arrest Minaban who resisted, the revolver fired wounding Minaban in the brain. Smith is jailed amid threats of lynching.
The Montreal directors deny the Vermont dispatch claiming the Southeastern railway sold to a New York syndicate. They were not authorized to sell and say no definite offer has yet been received for the road.
New York on August 27 reports Hant H. Stoddard of Syracuse and Jack Davis of Birmingham England agreeing to a box match for five hundred dollars a side to be staged in New York between September 20 and 29. Stoddard is backed by Richard K. Fox and Davis by Jem Ace.

Eben W. Fiske high sheriff of Middlesex county died at his home in Waltham at 4 15 AM on Monday August 27 after a brief heart disease illness. Born October 2 1819 in Framingham he spent years as deputy sheriff and served as acting sheriff and then won a full term. He leaves a widow three sons and a daughter. Other deaths noted include James P Carroll Henry C Ewing John H Stephens and several others with brief biographical notes.
