About 90 crewmen were landed after four fishing schooners were sunk by a submarine off Point Platte Miquelon. The J. J. Flaherty, Gloucester’s largest fleet vessel, owned by Gorton Pew, captained by Charles T. Gregory, with 24 Gloucester crew, was built in 1899 and valued at 35 000 to 66 000 dollars.
