New York aug 26. Lillian Hobart French, once dismissed by F Augustus Heinze, claims the 1897 financial panic was caused by Heinze and three men including Charles T. Barney and Charles W. Morse. She says she learned the secret while housekeeper at Heinze's Thirty third street apartments.
Mrs French recalls a late night meeting at Morse's Fifth Avenue home where Heinze Morse and Barney plotted to avert panic over United Copper. Heinze failed to borrow over a million and soon Barney died while Morse later went to prison.
A $30 000 pearl necklace with a charm pendant was offered for sale to jeweller Frederick Cutter in Somerville last Monday. Police believe it belonged to Mrs Henry Clews of Newport but she denies loss or theft and appeared at the Casino wearing the necklace.
The Boston Commercial Bulletin attacks the State Railroad Commission and J Pierpont Morgan over the Boston and Eastern project. It says Morgan opposed the new line and warns that pushing railroad despotism could trigger a widespread panic harming Boston development.
John Bagley also known as Charles Knightly was arrested in Toronto yesterday for larceny of jewelry and passing worthless checks. He allegedly swindled local businessmen out about $6000 during a three day stay, targeting Richard Burton a broker at 135 Congress street the Federal Trust Company and officials of the Canadian Pacific railroad local victims.
Bagley arrived last Saturday but began operations Monday by presenting himself to Burton claiming to represent E. J. Webb of Fishkill New York owner of Lip man Tunnel and Mines Company Arizona project. He passed a bogus check at National Newburgh Bank and drew against a Fishkill balance, vanishing after obtaining $1000 loan. Professor William James of Harvard University, famed philosopher and dean of American thought, died at his Chocorua Lake summer home after a critical illness following his return from Europe. He passed at 2 45 p m in unconsciousness, surrounded by family including his wife, daughter, son, and his brother Henry James.
