Two long term inmates from Deer Island boarded a plank and drifted at sea during a dinner menu dispute. A tug rescued them and brought them to Chelsea. City officials and Deer Island authorities conducted a thorough search with field patrols but found nothing until the incident concluded.
Towboat Annie rescued William H. Howard and John McGregor after they floated on a plank following a supposed fishing trip. They claimed their boat sunk and swam to safety, later revealing they were inmates escaped from Deer Island’s House of Correction. The keeper plans to build a power boat to pursue further escapes funded by the institution.
Eric Winquist, 27, of 149 Lamartine Street Jamaica Plain, drowned yesterday afternoon while swimming with a companion near the L Street bathhouse in South Boston. He and John Peterson swam toward a bay yacht. Peterson reached the yacht first and reported the missing man. Police opened locker 179 to check Winquist’s belongings, but no body had been found by closing time.
Reports from New York indicate Rev. Dr. Alexander Mann may depart Trinity Church Boston to become rector of Grace Church to succeed Rev. Dr. Huntington. Mann, then in Bar Harbor with his family, has led Trinity since March 1905 after succeeding Rev. Dr. E. Winchester Donald.
Arthur Carthers of Norwich Connecticut narrowly escaped death when his foot was caught in a switch on the Boston and Albany line near Allston station. A switching engine bore down as trainmen heard his screams and pulled him clear to City Hospital. amputation may be needed.
Major J E Ranlett of Concord New Hampshire 65 a noted Grand Army man drowned in Lake Winnipesaukee Bear Island area in the presence of his wife who could not aid him The episode occurred about five o'clock when he operated a motor boat alone with his wife traveling between Weirs and Bear Island in a dramatic accident.
Major Ranlett sank in 40 foot depths after falling from a fast 20 foot boat near Geary Ledges while his wife steered. He was a Civil War veteran, prominent Concord contractor, and longtime Bear Island summer resident. His wife, panicked and unconscious, survived after the boat reached Bear Island and she regained her senses.
At Betheny Aviation Field Rheims on August 26 Hubert Latham completed a 165 kilometre distance totaling 102 miles in 2 hours 18 minutes 93.5 seconds. This marked a new world distance record at the meet and surpassed previous Wright and Paulhan marks.
Except for a handful of one lap speed marks by Bleriot and Curtiss this week and Paulhan’s air time record, Latham now holds every distance and speed record. He descended only when the fuel ran dry and the monoplane’s grace and power impressed all as it battled rain and wind at altitudes up to 300 feet.
Detroit slugger Tyrus Cobb faced threats from President Ban Johnson of the American League to halt spiking tactics. Johnson said Cobb is the chief offender and must stop such play, noting a spiking incident against Athletics third baseman Baker in Detroit.
Boston can gain runner-up status if it wins and Philadelphia loses while Detroit holds a commanding lead as Chicago and Cleveland outcomes shake the AL standings. The Athletics drop to third after a Tigers victory tightens the pennant chase.

A fire gutted the residence of Mrs. Thomas Kearnan at 20 Gould Street in Wakefield shortly after 10 PM. A lamp explosion in a bedroom occupied by Miss Evelyn Martin and her mother, Mrs. Jessie Martin, caused the blaze. one woman was rescued and damages estimated at 1800 dollars.
Miss Martin slept as a lamp on a table near her bed exploded. Her mother rushed in, found her in a smoke filled room, and carried her to safety with help from Mrs Kearnan and others. They received shelter at neighbors while Miss Martin recovered.

Clyde C. Bruhm evaded Deputy Sheriff T. F. Clarkson and Portsmouth officers Hurley Shannon and West after a high speed pursuit by power boat. Bruhm and a companion, likely Harry Wingate of Salem, fled across two miles of countryside, jumped into a boat, crossed Spruce Creek, and vanished into woods. Authorities tracked them toward the wooded area between Kittery Point and Eliot Maine, aiming for a nearby railroad station.
Sailors aboard the prison ship Southery at the navy yard reported a black yacht docking in the back river near Kittery Point. Two young men aboard, later identified with Brhum, paddled ashore to explore Kittery before returning to the sloop as officers and a Portsmouth police marshal tighten the chase.
Wakefield names George F. Bullard, a retired Boston police officer and longtime resident, as chief of the Wakefield police to replace Harvey G. Brockbank who vanished three weeks earlier in a case that drew local attention.
