In San Francisco Aug 26 James Jeffries of Southern California stopped Butte miner Jack Munroe in 2nd round. Munroe enacted a poor showing and was knocked down twice in the first round and finished on the canvas after 45 seconds of the second. Spectators booed Munroe as Referee Graney ruled Jeffries winner.
Champion Jeffries defeated Munroe in 4 minutes 45 seconds of the first round. The miner's supporters had bet he would last longer, but Jeffries' left hook and body blows sealed the victory quickly. A large crowd attended, with gate receipts expected around 35 thousand dollars.
Jack Munroe told the Post he fought the best within him and, though defeated, does not feel disgraced. He rated Jeffries as a more formidable opponent than expected and believed no man living could defeat him, aside from Jeffries himself.
