Democratic Circular Appeals Office Staff for Campaign Funds
Boston in 1888 reports Colonel Charles D. Lewis treasurer of the Democratic State committee sent a bold circular to post office employees soliciting funds to support the party’s statewide campaign. The letter, signed in purple ink by stamp, urged contributions to defray campaign and legitimate expenses. The indiscriminate outreach drew dismay from loyal Cleveland supporters and was criticized as an imitation of old Republican fundraising tactics.
