Rev James C Beecher of Coscob Conn brother of Henry Ward Beecher and Rev Thomas K Beecher of Elmira shot himself in his room at a water cure in Elmira N Y after a day of apparent good health He had long battled mental troubles and had been at Middletown Asylum for years He died immediately from the self inflicted rifle shot while alone in his room at the facility

A fire at early morning hours damaged a barn owned by John English on Paris Street East Boston. The blaze started unknown origin and was spotted by a Seventh Division officer who rang Box 158. Two horses perished, valued at 300 dollars, while the building and contents suffered 600 to 1000 dollars in damage. Considerable property was saved.
