Thomas W. Lawson declared he would go to jail rather than disappoint the many Marshfield Fair prize drawing ticket holders. He was questioned about a Watch and Ward Society effort to obtain evidence of a violation of Section 7 of Chapter 214 of the Laws of Massachusetts.

Henry Clay Beattie Jr sits in a Chesterfield courtroom as seven witnesses testify in the Commonwealth’s case seeking the electric chair. A woman places him at a house with Beulah Binford the night before the killing, near the bloodstained car outside. BeattieInspect showed no visible distress as detectives were cross examined.
Among seven witnesses two were physicians Dr Herbert Mann and Dr Wilbur Mercer who examined Louise Beattie’s body the night of the murder. Others included Thomas Owen court stenographer and Mrs Beattie’s uncle Detectives Wren and Wiltshire of Richmond Coroner Loving of Chesterfield county and May Stuart a stout middle aged woman who spoke of Beattie’s ties to Beulah Binford. Only Owen recalled Beattie showing grief. The first witnesses aimed to establish death and largely reviewed inquest findings until Stuart testified.
In Rochester on the eve of the National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic Judge Harvey M. Trimble of Illinois appears certain to be elected commander in chief. General John McElroy plans to withdraw. The encampment city for next year will be chosen after tomorrow. Flora Staples Whitney of Wakefield and Cora M. Davis of Union are elected presidents of the Sons of Veterans Auxiliary and National Woman's Relief Corps respectively. The Sons of Veterans vote to withdraw support from the Memorial University at Mason City Iowa with officers to be elected tomorrow.
Captain Charles O. Boyd aged 67 longtime overseer of the poor for Melrose and state charity representative died suddenly of apoplexy while seated in the city hall office. He enlisted in the Civil war with the Sixth Light Battery and was discharged for wounds. Survived by two daughters Marion and Dorothy.
In Purcell Oklahoma Aug 24 a crowd of about 3000 roared approval as Peter Carter a Black man accused of attacking Mrs Minnie Spraggins was burned alive on a brush pile in the town center. Deputies Hayes and Farris tried to rescue him but were overpowered and shut in the courthouse.
A mob in Purcell lynched Carter after he allegedly assaulted Mrs. Spraggins and set their home on fire. Deputy sheriffs were captured by the crowd delaying arrest, while Carter was strapped to a pole and burned as onlookers watched. Mrs. Spraggins survived but is not expected to live.

Miss Sadie Stewart of Covington Kentucky eloped with Charles L. Costello a Brookline youth after returning from Europe. They were married in Middleboro by the Rev J P Sullivan at the Church of the Sacred Heart. Costello was with his mother at South Carver when Miss Stewart joined him after landing in Boston.
The 19 year old groom Costello and his 21 year old Protestant bride eloped after obtaining her mother’s permission. They wed in a Catholic church after meeting in Miami, Fla. The bride claims a fortune from her father, a Cincinnati steelman.
In yesterday's scores St. Louis edged Boston in 10 innings while Brooklyn defeated Chicago and Pittsburg split games with New York. Cincinnati beat Philadelphia in 14 innings, and New York tied Chicago for the National League lead. Harpoon won the Quincy cup for a second time as Uhlan clocked 2 023 4 miles at Goshen and Langford knocked out Tony Ross in the sixth round.
Harry N. Atwood, holder of the cross country record, said he would end his trip today and not fly to Boston. He noted his first accident that day, planned to visit friends in Boston, and explained the route delays and weather challenges from St. Louis to New York.
