Weirs New Hampshire August 24. Preparations for the ninth annual New Hampshire Veteran association reunion are nearly complete with grounds improved and two regimental buildings added at over seven thousand dollars. About one thousand spent on grounds and six hundred arriving by train and steamer for a daily crowd expected up to twenty five thousand. Main events begin with a morning reception by president John C Linehan of Pennacook, band concert and camp fire, then Grand Army Day and a sham battle at Groveion. A resolution calls for flags during veteran week and press publication of the request. Music by Highland band Lake Village Milford Cornet band and Manchester Grand Army drum corps. Large tents rise for Ladies Relief corps G A R Sons of Veterans and other participants.
A Monday afternoon downpour in Lynn caused major damage. Flooded basements, overturned vessels, and injured passengers followed a powerful windstorm. A 15 year old, Arthur Petty, suffered a severe leg cut and was hospitalized after binding the wound with his handkerchief. Lightning struck a boot factory worker, a house on Sargent's Court and 78 Pleasant Street, damaging interiors, chimneys, and furniture. Seven Nahant road telephone poles fell. a carryall tipped with minor injuries.
Providence Aug 24 Capt D S Babcock vice president and general manager of the New York Providence and Boston railway company was run over and killed in the yard at Stonington around 30 oclock tonight A train was being made up and he walked across the track in front of it and was struck knocked down and the train passed over his body killing him instantly
In Ameridian Mississippi the Queen and Crescent shops walk out over June and July pay and a regular monthly payday. Engineers are taken from engines and moved to the round house. No trains move on several lines affecting freight and passenger service. About 300 workers statewide have quit.
The steamship Alexandria reports the wreck of the Scotch steam dredge Beaufort on Aug. 8 off the Bermudas. Captain Penny and 12 crewmen are believed lost. The Beaufort sailed from Bermuda Aug. 2 after clearing Savannah July 20 for Greenock Scotland. Built on the Clyde to dig phosphate for Hume Brothers at Charleston, she failed in service after a hurricane six days out.
At Lakes George New York on August 24 the walking beam of the Ticonderoga broke, snapping the rod and beams and crushing the upper deck stairway. Passengers donned life preservers as rescuers from boats and tugs converged. Damage estimated at $2000 and insured.
A Chesapeake and Ohio freight train crashed into another on a side track seven miles west of Newport News Virginia. An open switch caused the wreck. Engines burned and physicians rushed to the scene as reports indicate multiple injuries and deaths among crew.
Syracuse news reports Judge Israel S. Spencer a prominent trustee died in March leaving nothing from an estate he held in trust. It is revealed that $50,000 of his trusts cannot be accounted for and his net worth was overestimated.
Wellfleet reports 670 barrels of mackerel received for the week ending last night. Most fish are large and good quality with late arrivals near shore hard to reach. Market prices have edged upward due to the smaller catch.
Gena F. Smith of BocCKland attempts suicide by jumping from the hurricane deck of the steamer Penobscot between Camden and Rockland. Clothes buoyed her until a boat rescued her. she is in exhausted condition. Officials believe insanity as the cause.
