British forces push along a 30 mile front on the Arras Albert line gaining several miles and seizing numerous villages. French troops drive toward Noyon crossing the Ailette and Oise rivers as German losses mount and thousands fall into Allied hands.
Herbert Hoover, federal food administrator, arrives in New York en route to Washington after brief visits to England and France. He says the United States will share in the allies sacrifice of food and blood for world democracy, and promises bread will be better next year.
Washington Aug 23 Champions of the House military committee lost their bid to defer 18 and 19 year olds until older men join the colors under the man power bill extending the draft age to 18 to 45. The move was defeated in the House paving the way for passage tomorrow. Senate leaders hoped minor amendments could be disposed of and the measure passed before week end adjournment.
In a vigorous day of debate the House voted 167 to 120 against Rep McKenzie of Illinois on an amendment directing separate classification and delayed call of youths 18 to 21. Amendments by Rep Johnson and Rep Blackman to set minimum draft ages at 19 and 21 were defeated.
