Metcalf Comet Too Faint To See With Naked Eye
Astronomers report Metcalf’s comet as an eighth magnitude wanderer, invisible without a telescope. European and American calculations suggest a parabolic orbit, with no clear return path. At its brightest it remains too dim for naked sight, about 100 million miles from Earth near discovery, approaching the sun with a tail roughly 50 000 miles long and a diameter near 10 000 miles. The comet rises in the afternoon, moves west after dusk, and will be photographed at Harvard when conditions permit.
