Residents express strong support for a public reception to honor the Jackies as they back a moral alliance. Local officials and community groups rally behind the event, emphasizing unity, civic pride, and shared ethical standards across diverse neighborhoods.
Colonel Henry Walker of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company returns from a two months’ trip to England and the continent after illness in London. He doubts the Prince of Wales will visit Boston with the London Ancients in 1900, cites strong Anglo American sympathy and a moral alliance, and notes French public opinion shifting from Spain to common sense as the war unfolds. Six warships are bound for Boston. Mayor Quincy has not yet been alerted and officials debate a public reception, with Governor Wolcott confirming the fleet’s arrival likely Thursday.
Aug. 23. The Second Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry did not move to new quarters as planned due to absent camp provisions. Rev. Deming Mitchell Hoar and others visited the sick soldiers, aided by the Volunteer Aid Association, which arranged meals and transport to the station. Private J. D. Allen, in frail condition, clung to hope of home as Dr. Prescott and Hoar offered comfort.
Special dispatch reports Key West treating sick marines as a disgrace to the U S government. Marines from Guantanamo under Huntington’s command faced heat fever and yellow fever with scant medical staff as Army clinicians left for northern posts. Civil and military observers condemn the hospital conditions and delays in care for the wounded heroes.
Colonel Lawrence J. Logan of the Ninth shows marked improvement after being allowed to sit up yesterday. He is pleased by news of the oilette's harbor arrival and that the regiment on the steamer is convalescent. If his condition continues to improve, he may attend the reception when the Ninth arrives in the city. Forecast for Boston Wednesday calls for showers with possible thunder, then clearing, light southwesterly winds.
James Bent a 24 year old colored man was arrested by Station 4 officers for assault and robbery. Police say he allegedly held up James B Larkin at 1 30 am on Oxford street stealing a gold watch and injuring Larkin with a blackjack. Larkin will identify Bent from eight suspects this morning for court action.
Inspector McCausland arrested George H. Wood, 63, on a charge of receiving $100 from Eugene H. Judkins of 28 School Street. Wood and George D. Johnson allegedly sold a half interest in a real estate business to Judkins claiming furniture ownership and $1400 yearly business, claims of false pretenses now brought by Judkins.
