Captain Hellweg cites deliberate vandalism aboard ex-German warships

Captain J. F. Hellweg, commander of the convoy that brought the ex German warships to America, says the Ostfriesland was in such poor condition on arrival in New York that it would be hazardous to sail again. He attributes the damage to deliberate vandalism by former German crews at Scapa Flow and notes deliberate looting and sabotaged systems caused multiple machinery failures during the crossing. He recalls a flooded fireroom after a pipe line gave way 1000 miles from Europe, forcing the ship to sail with only one engine while towing the Frankfurt.
