Bishop Samuel Smith Harris of Michigan died in London after a brief illness. Born in Autauga County Alabama on September 14, 1841, he became an Episcopal bishop after ordination in 1869 and earned several honorary degrees. He founded the Hobart Guild at Ann Arbor and promoted religious and educational efforts. George O. Harris, longtime Salem resident and former bookkeeper for N Thayer & Co Boston, died at 78. he left two sons, George R. Harris and W. C. Harris.

In dense fog off San Francisco Bay the steamship Oceanic plowed into the steamer City of Chester, tearing her nearly to halves and sinking her within minutes.
