R G Dun reports the U S economy improving with cautious buying across sectors. Iron production climbs to 169,576 tons in August while rail movement stays light and prices hold. Domestic iron output exceeds per capita demand, bar and structural mills run well, and wool and dress goods markets show activity, with mixed results across major cities and regions.

Two Women Drowned In Moonlight Sloop Voyage
A sixteen person moonlight sail on the Mattie F ended with two women, Kate Whelton and Mary Whelton aged 19 and 22, drowning when a tender boat swamped off City Point. Four men, all about 20 or 21, were rescued after recovering the girls’ bodies. Tim Sheehan gave a detailed account blaming the wind and seaworthiness, not carelessness, for the tragedy.

An Ante Revolutionary Parsonage Torn Down in Flatbush
The oldest parsonage in Kings County, a Dutch colonial house built around 1700 on Flatbush Avenue, was demolished. It stood along the old east road, near Vernon Avenue, and was tied to the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Flatbush. The structure housed ministers, linked to disputes between Cartus and Conferentie parties, and later served varied uses before decay. Major Gustave A. Jahn bought the property for 7500 dollars to create a lawn and stables, preserving few remnants of its Dutch timber and Holland bricks.
