The Grant Monument Committee reports total receipts of 4983 today, bringing the grand total to 51325. It has issued appeals to the public, business leaders, clergy, editors and bankers, urging subscriptions and donations. Resolutions honoring Gen Grant, engrossed by the Produce Exchange, will be presented to the family. The committee aims to raise 1,000,000.
Bangor Me Aug 21 The New England fair entries closing show unprecedented crowding with 10 blooded cattle classes including Holsteins Ayreshires and Guernseys and prizes for fat cattle and large oxen never before equalled in the New England states The horse department also reports record entries reflecting strong turnout and interest in the August 31 to September 4 event.

Daniel A Vaughan of St Marys Kansas started for Boston Aug 21 1884 to visit sister Mrs Fitzpatrick in East Dedham. Brother Timothy accompanied him to Topeka and last saw him on the train. He disappeared en route likely due to heart disease. Aged 41, 5 feet 8 inches, left thumb lost at second joint. Former Worcester resident worked at Charles Bakers lumber yard. Wife living in Afton Kaw insured through Metropolitan Worcester agency. A Worcester lawyer handling the case.
About 200 members gathered in Ellsworth on August 21 for the First Maine Heavy Artillery reunion. Leaders elected included Col. Z. A. Smith of Boston as president and W. B. Campbell of Ellsworth with G. P. Smith of Harrington as vice presidents. A. UC Lawyer of Bangor was secretary and Capt. F. A. Cummings of Bangor treasurer. Dinner provided by Ellsworth citizens at Hancock Hall followed by a public afternoon meeting with speeches by J. A. Kole, Mayor Redman, Senator Hale, Col. Z. A. Smith, Rev. Dr. Tenney, Rep. Frank Duntley a 26 year old brakeman for the Boston and Maine railroad was thrown under a train while uncoupling cars at East Wakefield this morning and died instantly. He resided in Greenfield.

A Cleveland and Pittsburg line freight train was ditched just outside Cleveland causing 13 loaded cars to burn with a loss of 15000 dollars. In Shenango Pennsylvania a New York Pennsylvania and Ohio line train broke in two, twelve cars were ditched and brakeman Charles Berry was killed with several other trainmen injured.

St Louis August 21 The St Louis Sugar Refining company with a capital of 750000 was organized this afternoon. It grows out of the old Belcher Sugar Refining company and will start operations in the old Belcher refinery around December 1.
The Wisconsin Central railroad contracted for 116 miles of track to reach Chicago. Construction should finish by December 1, linking a through line from St. Paul to Chicago and another from Chicago to Lake Superior, expanding regional rail connectivity.
Hallifax Nova Scotia reports the Norwegian bark Tros from Liverpool arrived at night with the crew of the fishing schooner Ada M. Evans of St Johns Newfoundland. The Ada M. Evans sank after a collision on August 15.
