Easy Victory for Giants as Washingtons Demolished by Detroit Nine
In Washington on August 20 the Giants overwhelmed two pitchers as Anson’s Kickers failed to mount a challenge. Crane struggled with wildness, aided by Washington fielding errors, while Buffinton was effective for Boston. The game featured errant Washington plays and limited Boston offense, leading to a lopsided result. In Philadelphia Casey struggled against the Giants before Ferguson and later Casey were tried. Detroit and Chicago renewed an exciting clash as Detroit edged a tight, well-pitched game with Baldwin thwarting Detroit’s offense. Attendance reached about 7,000 as the Champs watched a close Detroit victory unfold.

Ex Alderman Whitten Hosts Boston Press in Harbor Yacht Outing
Edging into a buoyant civic tale, Ex-Alderman Charles V Whitten commodore of the Hull Yacht Club ferried City Hall reporters aboard his yacht Silvie. The Boston press corps enjoyed Whitten’s hospitality as Al Harlow of the Herald shared a trove of patriarchal stories while the Globe man chased sea serpent rumors with an inverted glass and water, and Water Commissioner William B smart regaled the crew with Magailoway fishing yarns that might reel in belief if OG Bill Jones were alive.

Irregular letter theft at Salem Post Office spans years
Investigation shows a long running larceny of letters from the Salem Post Office. The first missed letter dates to 1881 with checks for Danvers National Bank mailed at Middleton and later remailed at Daversport. Last year a batch of Middleton letters with checks totaled about 3800 dollars missing. Additional losses include a July 31 money letter from Middleton and Danvers letters with checks. No losses since August 1. Postmaster Joseph Batchelder of Middleton has reported each case to inspectors. The trouble appears to occur after letters leave Middleton.
