Bull Pools Buy Aiding New York Market Rally
The New York market moved higher on Aug 19 led by bull pools notably the Gates group. Dominion Iron and Steel rose to 791-2 then closed 781-4 for a net gain of 13-8 while American Telegraph climbed to 1701-2. Copper shares were weak with Tamarack and Osceola targets of a possible freeze-out, and Southern Pacific plus Union Pacific drew heavy buying. The Osgood faction dumped Colorado Fuel and Iron, slipping to 88 1-2 before rally. Major stocks closed at high average levels with Amalgamated, Sugar, St. Paul, Missouri Pacific and others among leaders. Money market remained firm with gradual rate rises and light demand.

Card Sharps Roulette Loses Millionaire Guests Aboard
Two alleged card sharps were exposed during a poker game aboard the Kronprinz Wilhelm by Captain Richter. Wealthy players including Willie K. Vanderbilt Jr and Oliver Belmont played nightly high stakes while a New York woman linked to the plot was involved. After signals were seen, the captain ordered the two cheaters out of the game and banned them from further play. The voyage from England to New York continued with no more stranger participation in the card room.
