A 30 foot motor boat carrying 14 Fall River visitors to Newport exploded on the Sea conner River near Tiverton. George Antuya 18 and Lydia Mercier 17 died. Joseph Chouinard 26 and others suffered severe burns. Rescue boats saved the survivors and ambulances transported the injured to Fall River hospitals.

Sonoma Girl, a top trotter from California, sold by J. D. Springer to Lotta Crabtree for about 30000 dollars. Crabtree, famed actress and owner of Nutboy, had long pursued the mare and beat rival Frank Jones’s bid by 5000 dollars. Sonoma Girl’s sale follows a season that saw her sweep rich stakes on the grand circuit.
Former owner Mr. Springer, a hobbyist driver, parts with Sonoma Girl after poor performances at Buffalo and Poughkeepsie. Lancaster August 18 Herbert Parker ex attorney general of this State rescued his 18 year old daughter Katherine from Spectacle Pond where she fainted and sank while swimming with friends. Parker swam to shore with his daughter and revived her before she sank again. The party feared she was dead until his timely intervention.
In Great Barrington Aug 18 a 60 horsepower touring car collided with an express train near Ashley Falls at 50 mph. Charles J Root 48 Mrs Joel Root 82 Miss Candace Roberts 72 Miss Mary P Root 51 and Miss Catherine Root 13 of Bristol Conn were involved. three died, one dying and another seriously hurt. The Roots were a prominent Connecticut family in business and society.
An express New Haven train bound for here and an auto driven by Mr Root collided near an unguarded crossing below the Ashley Falls station. The auto outran the train, but misjudged the crossing. The impact killed Mr Root and his mother Mrs Joel Root, who were hurled about 30 feet in the crash. The tonneau and auto were destroyed and the train halted as workers aided the injured.
Ralph Norcross of Lynn Massachusetts died instantly when a car owned by J A Hunting of Houston Texas plunged over an embankment on the Jackson road. The chauffeur suffered a scalp wound and two other occupants were bruised in the wreck.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for fair and continued cool conditions on Monday with a chance of showers Tuesday. Light to fresh northerly winds shift to variable as temperatures rise moderately in New England and Eastern New York.
Chicago August 18 Three hundred operators employed by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company across the Southwest may be called out before night unless a ten percent wage increase is granted President Small aims to isolate Chicago from national telephonic lines If the order goes out it would further isolate the country by striking cable operators though that move is not likely to happen The article notes the broader aim to disrupt communications and the low likelihood of the cable strike succeeding.
Robert W. Barros secretary of the local Telegraphers' Union was expelled after returning to work on the Associated Press wire in Worcester. He had led the strike and faced a bond offer to stay out. A Boston AP representative discussed the situation with him before the discharge.
District Superintendent C F Ames of Western Union defends the strike stance arguing union unity among telegraphers and leased wire operators.
