Waller displays headwork to prevent spills on a slick surface. Riders must cover seventy five miles to qualify. Elkes continues his remarkable form sprinting in fast and furious action, while Elkes keeps up his excellent work.
In a driving storm the third day of the six day race at Charles River Park ended with Harry Elkes leading, A B Dench second, Waller third and Barnaby fourth. The night was declared off at 9 for safety as riders protested and eventual start was set for 1 PM to make up the last hour.
Showers dominate today in Boston and surrounding areas with rain likely this afternoon. An unsettled start gives way to fair conditions later with winds shifting to the west as the week progresses.
A veteran treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce, Frederick Newton Cheney, dies at the Hotel Rexford. The piece laments a newly enacted state election clause replacing majority with plurality in city conventions, enabling a minority to name a nominee and potentially benefiting ex Mayor Curtis. Mr Cheney died of heart failure after a brief illness at the Rexford area near Dresden Germany where he was staying. He had long been a Boston merchant and former treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce, resigning in 1895 amid financial accusations. An aunt in Westminster Mass. has been informed.
The U S battleship Indiana under Captain Taylor is set to depart from Halifax for a New England or Maine port to join Admiral Siccardi squadron. Taylor praises the crew’s work and the ship’s state of readiness after docking and cleaning.
David Madden of 353 Hanover Street rode his buggy across Boylston near Fairfield when an inward bound electric car struck him. He was thrown to the street and cut about head and face, then attended by Dr Whipple and taken home.
Arthur Normisky 20 of 77 Everett Street Chelsea was arrested last evening on charges of assaulting T. R. Laughlin at 144 Endicott Street. Laughlin suffered a serious skull fracture believed to be caused by a monkey wrench wielded by Normisky.
A cable reports the captain J. N. Whitman and mate William Saunders were murdered aboard the Olive Pecker off Bahia after the schooner burned. The ship had earlier mutinied in Boston harbor, with Whitman acclaimed as a skilled seaman and devoted to his wife and child in Rockland.
