William Goode, 50 East Lenox Street, drowned at Commercial Wharf after the Lily party’s return from Lovell’s Island. A companion was dragged in, two others fell in. Ramblers’ Club members rescued a friend as Goode sank. Carey of Salutation Street leapt in and aided the rescue before the body reached the morgue.

Balloonist Jacobs dies in Baldwin Park crash during race

Frank Jebs of Cincinnati, a veteran balloonist, made his 1006th ascent. At 150 feet, Jacobs's balloon burst as Ed Dudley’s craft rose. His parachute failed to open, sending him to the ground where he died half an hour later, after sustaining fatal injuries. Jacobs's wife and child watched.

A three story structure at Ruggles and Tremont streets was found on fire early this morning and suffered heavy damage. The Brooks Bank Note Company and a local bicycle dealer named Hayden occupied the premises at the time.

In Brooklyn on August 16 a train fatally struck Mr Thaddeus K Martin and his wife while they walked along the Prospect Park and Coney Island railroad at Kings Highway. Mrs Martin was sister to the late Alderman Daniel O Connell who died last year leaving a $750000 estate. The engineer and conductor were arrested.

Three Almost Drowned In South Boston Bathing Tragedy

Louis Betzga twenty from Hampshire street sank at the L street bath as cramps struck during a 3 pm swim with four or five friends. He dragged two companions down, all three perilously near death until Cornelius J. Desmond on a nearby raft dived in and pulled them to safety. Betzga, exhausted, was treated by two physicians and sent home unattended.

At a Sunday school picnic in Port Chester New York Mrs James B Moulton was carried beyond her depth while swimming Rev R L Jackson of the Presbyterian Church went to her aid and was carried away. church members and rowers Kelly Patterson and Girard came to their aid saving them both Mrs Moulton remains ill while the minister has recovered from the ordeal.

Drownings At Peak's Isle In Harbor Accident

In Portland on August 16 a punt accident near Peak's Isle left John O'Brien and 15 year old Eddie Duddy aboard when a lobster pot drawn them off course. O'Brien swam to shore but suffered cramps and sank. Alderman Thomas Duddy rescued the boy.

Polish Bather Drowned in Merrimac River

Lawrence August 16 Boris Rachkowski aged 18 was drowned while bathing in the Merrimac River around 3 PM. He and companions swam when he strayed beyond his depth and sank.

English mail thief leaves country with bride six weeks later

Henry Barfield, an English mail carrier, arrived on the Pavonia with his bride, then was arrested for stealing two packages addressed to the Duke of Norfolk. The larceny, valued at 1415, occurred Aug 4 1896 in London. Barfield was extradited after Scotland Yard traced them aboard the ship.

Nearly Black Flemish Dresser Displayed in Antique Style

An old Flemish Dresser from the 16th century is described with dark Flemish Oak stained to look 300 years old and similar color to the Coronation Chair in Westminster Abbey. The piece features carved beasts, ornate fronts, and a storage closet of 17 340 cubic inches behind great doors. A general 1896 97 catalogue offers the item, 256 pages and 300 illustrations, sent for five 2 cent stamps.
