Stormy caucus sinks New York vets bid for commander
A volatile New York delegation caucus failed to unite behind Colonel Shotts for commander in chief. On the first ballot Shotts led, Bakewell had one vote, and three abstained. A subcommittee tried to sway the minority, but Bakewell’s backers demanded a promise to appoint two women to high office if Shotts won. Shotts refused, adjournment followed, and no candidate emerged. The split likely improves Blackmar’s odds.
