Amesbury Ferry Hat Factory Burning Despites Firefighting Efforts

A large five story Amesbury Ferry hat factory owned by Merimack Hat Company burned rapidly tonight destroying the building with about eighty workers affected. Thirty Reform School inmates escape from Westboro facility

About 4 o clock this afternoon thirty boys aged 10 to 17 escaped from the State Reform School at Westboro Massachusetts. They were sentenced by probate courts for various counties during their minority. Authorities suspect external help and a statewide search was under way with none recaptured by 9 PM. Some boys are described as expert thieves and pickpockets.

Ohio District Nominates Hudson for Congress

In Marietta the Fifteenth Ohio District Democrats and Liberal Republicans nominated R. R. Hudson a Liberal Republican for Congress. Separately in New York a heated debate on the presidential question drew large mixed crowds at Cooper Institute with Saunders advocating Grant era reform and Garnett backing re election. In Alabama the Republican State Convention in Montgomery chose Safford as chairman and later nominated a slate including Turner Lewis Ragland and others with a Congress man at large to be named.
