Panama Aug 14 The canal buzzed with activity as the steamship Ancon received a last scrub and fine tuning for an early morning departure. Officials and crew prepared for the 10 000 ton ocean going steamship to begin the new canal era with a first voyage through the new waterway.
The Uncon owned by the War Department and leased to the Panama Railroad will depart Christobal fully loaded for the New York to Colon route. The voyage plans include a 7 am departure, 9 am Gatun Locks entry, and an 11 hour run to the Pacific with officials aboard. Traffic on the canal will be suspended 8 am to 5 pm. Governor Goethals and President Belisario Porras accompany the crew, with 74 aboard led by Captain G. E. Sukeforth.
A young naval officer asked Secretary Daniels for leave to serve with the warring European powers. He argued the experience would aid the United States. The request was promptly denied.
Cunard manager Charles Stewart denied reports that the Laconia's destination was changed due to the war. The liner, which sailed from Liverpool in August, will land in New York as scheduled since last winter.
Leon Voule a 13 year old resident of the House of the Guardian Angel Roxbury caught his arm in a laundry machine yesterday and suffered severe mangling. He was taken to City Hospital where surgeons amputated the arm at the shoulder.
Mrs. Gertrude Holliday Leonard, a leading Boston suffragist and chair of the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association, has not been heard from since she left July 4 for Engelberg Switzerland where she planned to stay until October after organizing the May parade.
A belated telegraph despatch from three days late says Miss Alicia M. Kennedy daughter of a Boston butter and egg business leader and her mother were marooned in London with thousands of other Americans awaiting a liner home. They had left Boston in July to tour Russia and had earlier automobil ed in Wales. The war outbreak halted their return from England where they were stranded.
The Ashton Lawrence Free Hospital for horses in Boston completed its first year serving 242 equine patients and functioning as a receiving station for the Animal Rescue League. The facility at 78 Northampton Street, near Washington, relied on volunteer veterinarians led by Dr. Frank J. Sullivan and Archibald McDonald with gratitude to Drs Delano, Lee, Cronon, and Simpson for free services.
The American Agricultural Chemical Company denies any plan to close its factory this week or indefinitely. It states operations continue with only a temporary layoff of some workers until Monday, with expect to resume normal production.
Seymour F. Glover testified that his sister-in-law Lillian Glover Delemarre and her brother William A LeBlanc plotted to take all of the late Clarence Glover estate. He said he had not spoken to her for two years and accused her of trying to exhaust the funds so he would receive nothing.
Witnesses say notes for 1000 and 6150 dollars were endorsed to show payment after the first husband’s death and tampered with to look good. Glover’s administrator Samuel D. Elmore testified that Mrs Delemarre sought reimbursement from the estate and claimed her husband owed her about 7000 dollars. Trial adjourned to Monday for defense by Delemarre and her brother William A LeBlanc.
The city subtreasury reports 181 people deposited 97120 for the relief of Americans in Europe. Earlier reports had misstated the sum as 28000.
Cape Cod Pageant begins today in Bourne with 60 to 1006 participants across 15 scenes depicting the region's history from 1602. The event features special music by Daniel Gregory Mason and a program by William Chauney Langdon, with trains and ferries adjusted for visitors and Governor Walsh attending on Governor's Day.
Joseph Rosenburg appeared in Malden court charged by the Sealer of Weights and Measures with weighing ice by an unrecognized system. Evidence showed he used no scales and guessed weights. Judge Bruce fined him ten dollars and ordered use of the accepted weighing method in the future.

Colonel Theodore Roosevelt will be greeted by about 15 000 people at Fenway Park next Monday afternoon as the crowd sings the Star Spangled Banner. The welcome is organized by the committee overseeing the Progressive field day plans.

A letter from Duddy’s deceased ally Robinson denies Duddy’s involvement, stating he had nothing to do with the Norton murder.
The Dedham assessors set the tax rate at $18, unchanged from last year. The 1914 assessed value totals $16,236,715 with a town tax of $1,271,905 and real estate valuation of $10,539,700 plus personal property at $5,697,015. The property tax levy for 1914 amounts to $200,960, up $22,894.23 due to an extra statutory levy and $21,473.59 for an appropriated extra tax.
Colonel Roosevelt arrives in Boston in the afternoon and is escorted to the arena where the Star Spangled Banner will be sung by Miss Mabel Trask and Miss Minnie Fowler Scott. Progressive leaders expect the largest turnout yet and have tickets selling fast across party lines. If weather turns bad the speech moves to the arena at 5 PM with field events postponed. Seating plans allow up to 35 000 attendees.
Thomas P. Riley assistant attorney general and others abroad in July are reported safe in Ireland. Riley told the Dublin Telegraph Americans show interest in the Irish question and the volunteer movement. He praised John Redmond and Joseph Devlin as strong leaders and noted Irish societies now cooperate with diminished divisions.
Eugene Chassan oil aged 66 percent former president of the New Orleans Stock Exchange shot and killed himself at the exchange today. He had been in ill health for some time. For 21 years he was vice-president and for seven years president of the exchange.
A crowd of English and French reservists aged 50 to 60 besieged the Allan liner Numidian as it prepared to sail for Glasgow. They demanded embarkation to reach England as seamen or stokers to join the army but were turned back with no crossing possible.
More than 30 English reservists prepare to join the British army as the liner Numidian sails. Patrick O Neill, 72, returning from the United States since 1869, hopes to enlist despite his age, vowing to fight to see the Germans defeated. The Leyland liner left East Boston with cargo and no passengers.
Postmaster General Burleson ordered a suit to recover 57 600 from the United States beet sugar industry for postage on a pamphlet circulated under Senator Lodge s frank while the Underwood tariff bill was before Congress The pamphlet allegedly franked illegally was by Truman H Palmer secretary of the beet sugar industry
Senate opposition from both parties targets a conference report allowing foreign built ships into the coastwise trade. After hours of debate, lawmakers set a Monday vote with possible White House discussions planned beforehand. Senators O Gorman Gallinger Cummins aired defense and criticisms of the measure and its ownership rules.
