It’s expected an early and late mail train for New Bedford and the city may be provided, while the pony mail remains in use for now. Congressman Randall returns home with unreassuring reports on progress. The department plans to spend funds for the upgrades, requiring influence and effort to secure them. A key pony team mail remains essential to business.
A severe storm swept through Danbury and southern Connecticut around six o clock. Lightning struck many locations and several people were stunned but no fatalities were reported.
Arrived vessels include brigades and steamers from Boston Taunton New Bedford Martha's Vineyard and Rockland plus ships sailing to Hamburg Glasgow Newcastle and Havana. Cleared ships include H M Whitney Burgundia Brooklyn City Camden and Servia with numerous minor craft noted in plume of port records.
Washington August 14 The White House urged a policy to force the election bill through the Senate but caucus resistance and a large Republican faction opposed changing rules. Forty senators attended with about fifteen pledging opposition while others admitted passage was unlikely. A rules vote is expected to report a close debate ending by August and adjournment planned, with the force bill essentially dead for now.
Shippers across the United States win a victory as the words not negotiable are struck from the uniform bill of lading. A joint committee of trunk lines central traffic associations and lake and rail lines met to discuss the change. Chairman Blanchard urged removal of the label and the amendment was unanimously approved with the new bill of lading to take effect September 1.
Fire this afternoon caused 500 dollars damage to a dwelling on Acushnet Avenue. Stephen Russell, an aged man, narrowly escaped death as flames trapped him in a room opening to an attic. he escaped via the stairs and suffered severe burns but is expected to live after prompt care.
The Tribune reports a plan to establish a national Baptist university in New York with a $20,000,000 endowment. John D. Rockefeller is expected to fund the project.
London, Aug. 14. Sir William Vernon Harcourt condemned the Lords as an obstruction to reform. He said the upper chamber has nearly ceased to exist as a deliberative body, stalling liberal measures for a century. He stressed the clash between the reactionary Lords and the Liberal Commons as a central political issue.
Grarva August 14 William Tell is declared extinct as a historical figure and his stories branded as patriotic legends by Schwyz authorities. The government excludes Tell from school histories and calls the tales fanciful. The Swiss despair is noted over the Tell chapel and related shrine loyalties.

The House library committee backs the Senate plan despite Mrs. Grant’s silence, while Flower cites 156000 dollars raised for Riverside Park monument and Sanger argues New York already funds the memorial.
Niagara Falls Aug 14 A boat with two unknown men on the Canadian side above Horseshoe Falls was swept over the falls in the forenoon. Rescue efforts continued as authorities sought to identify the missing individuals.

An explosion on the third floor of Kendall Manufacturing Company in Providence injures ten workers and kills two men, Michael Carroll and John McElroy.
