Lieut Greely reports that on June 6 1884 at Camp Clay near Cape Sabine Grinnell Land he ordered the execution of Private Charles B Henry fifth Cavalry for continued thieving. Henry had stolen bacon and liquor amid extreme famine and was condemned after an open inquiry and warnings of punishment.
Survivors Diego Perez Enrique Granados Pedro Obero and Joaquin Ceres arrived in New York aboard Bothnia recount the July 20 collision between the steamer Gijon and Laxham. The Gijon sank after ramming the Laxham in fog. 110 perished, including Capt. Yglesias. Only a few survivors and the vessel Zoe rescued some passengers later.
Thousands of spectators filled Newburyport as crowds welcomed Lieut. A W Greely home from Arctic service. In New York on Friday night a package of $20,000 in bank notes vanished from the Leather Manufacturers Bank. Engineer John McMahon, then assisting the porter, is suspected for secreting the money in the building. The cash, partly newly printed notes, was to be sent by Adams express but never reached its destination.
In Frankfort Kentucky on August 14 a failed escape at the penitentiary left four wounded and a guard knocked senseless before two convicts and two guards were wounded. Three inmates escaped with assistance from a life prisoner named Cunningham.
The August storm improved Cape weirs with big catches. Sandwich traps yielded about 221 bluefish weighing 12 to 15 pounds each, a record for the area. Mackerel fared better in other localities, while bait was scarce and some weirs produced no catch.

Providence suffers a pitching duel as the Bostons win 1-0 on a ninth inning run. Hines and Farrell collect eighth inning singles, Hornung’s fielding play helps shut down Providence. Morrill, Whitney steal, Start makes a key play to end the rally. Attendance near 3000.
The American Bankers Association met in Saratoga Springs on August 14 with President Gage in the chair. Officers were reappointed except for several changes, and papers on London Bankers Institute, One Name Paper, and bankruptcy law were presented. The body adopted resolutions on associate membership, warned banks about blackmailer demands, and heard remarks from noted bankers and executives before adjourning sine die.
Worcester Mass August 14 Two thousand people representing 22 granges Patrons of Husbandry attended the midsummer reunion at Wasacum Lake Sterling. Morning featured general sport followed by afternoon addresses by State Master James Draper Worcester State Grange lecturer Wm H Earle and Secretary John E Russell of the state board of agriculture.

SYCAMORE Illinois August 14 Louis Taylor the farm hand employed by Heck Mitchell who yesterday attempted to outrage and murdered Kitty the 17 year old daughter was pursued by 200 men intent on lynching him. Overtaken Taylor shot himself dead. His victim's mother has become insane.
