London Aug 3 reports say four Russian warships are missing after a fierce Japanese assault on the Port Arthur escape. Three ships reached Kiauchau and face disarmament or sea escape within 24 hours. Czarevitch is ruined, another cruiser wrecked at Woosung, Japanese casualties 70. Abe et al.
U S secret service men detain Dr Frank G Sanft of 66 Centre Street Roxbury and seize $10000 in bogus two dollar notes amid allegations of an organized counterfeit operation. Two Roxbury residents suspected as accomplices fled the city and are being sought with help from New York and Providence police. Officers found letters at the Sanft home and gear including Chinese fiber paper ink printing frames and a German lens camera. Authorities shadow Mrs Sanft and two young daughters while continuing the probe and awaiting next steps.
A northbound Boston express near Bronx Park derailed sections of a 35-ton truss under a new bridge, sending multiple heavy members into the rail cut. Five men worked the truss. three fell, two seriously injured. One man, Frederick Hartman, 31, is likely to die. Track clearance will take over 12 hours. 10,000 passengers were guided to northbound trains via a woods path as flagmen diverted traffic to four tracks of NYNH&H and Harlem divisions.
