The American League pennant race tightens with Boston defeating Detroit and Philadelphia while leaders remain tied. Boston’s win pulls them within one and a half games of the leaders and within half a game with a possible doubleheader to come, keeping the standings highly unsettled.
In Huntington avenue park Detroit and Philadelphia Boston notes describe a clash where Boston defeats Addie Joss and the Cleveland Naps 4 to 2. The Red Sox secure their sixth straight win despite heavy pressure from Lajoie and his fielding. Arellanes takes a rough game but Boston’s timely hitting and defense carry the day.
Addie Joss was battered yet again and Frank Arellanes matched him as the Naps managed only two runs on 12 hits including triples and doubles. Arellanes earned credit for steadiness, staving off rallies in the first, fifth, seventh and ninth innings and keeping the score tied or out of reach.
A fierce gale yesterday morning battered the New York Yacht Club fleet. Two yachts remain unaccounted for at nightfall: the Sea Fox owned by Dallas B. Pratt of New York and the Winsome owned by Henry F. Lippitt of Providence. The rest of the fleet found refuge along the coast from Vineyard Haven to Port.
Aug 11. The U S navy tug Nezinscot sank off Cape Ann killing four crewmen. Captain Thomas E Evans and his wife were rescued damaged but alive. Heroic teen Harry Evans, 14, saved his mother and F R Bitter by pushing a drifting man overboard as he clung to a floating oak grating. Survivors include Dr Charles F Trotter Seaman C L Taylor Cook C F White and L R Edwards. A naval court of inquiry will determine facts once Captain Evans recovers.
The Red Sox beat Cleveland 4 to 2 while the Tigers and Athletics suffer defeats. Doves put up a strong effort but fall to Pittsburg. Marblehead hosts 118 boats in 21 Corinthian races as Nap praises Boston, and President Dovey denies Boston National club sale. Johnson and Sam Berger are noted as unique articles.
Lieutenant Sutton's mother cites strongest evidence of homicide as Sergeant Archibald Todd of Boston testifies. Todd, uneasy on the stand, repeats his prior statements from the Boston Post and adds he discussed the shooting with Lieutenant Roelker. He says he saw the man running, heard commands to halt, and saw Sutton fall dead.
Todd heard he was wanted to testify in the case late Monday night when a Boston Post reporter informed him in Wakefield Massachusetts. The disclosure marked his first awareness of involvement in the proceedings.
K Harris of Philadelphia, an artist, drowned in the Charles River yesterday while swimming from the B A A float toward Harvard bridge. He was part of a party attempting a record swim. Dr John Cunningham reached the half way mark and found Harris missing.
Dr. Cunningham and party learn of Harris disappearance after he dived from a float. Police alerted, a long search follows with no result by nightfall. Harris, about 35, is connected to Philadelphia art and club circles and stayed with G. H. Haskell in Jamaica Plain.
Salt Lake City Aug 11 mid summer heat thinned the Grand Army of the Republic encampment parade. About 100 children and 20 veterans were carried from the streets with 40 treated at emergency stations. No fatalities occurred as 6000 veterans marched before 100000 spectators.
The Clyde line steamship Arapahoe from New York to Charleston and Jacksonville broke its tail-shaft this afternoon and reported by wireless the distress signal C Q D. Located 21 miles southwest of Diamond Shoals lightship, it drifted helplessly as the steamer Huron arrived to assist at 6 p m and likely tow the Arapahoe.
Watchman Fred Harvey fired three shots at a man he believed tried to burn a wooden storage building on Eastern avenue. The intruder escaped across railroad tracks and Vale street after Harvey extinguished a blaze in the doorway.
Firemen extinguished the blaze swiftly. Harvey describes the arsonist as short, stocky, in dark clothes and a black cap. Police launched a manhunt, but the culprit remained at large by late hour, provoking neighborhood excitement and threats of rough treatment if seized.
In New York on August 11 Judge Goff ruled in the Supreme Court that a soiled collar and unshaven face justify separation proceedings. Married men who wore mourning bands on their linen and let their beards unravel must groom themselves to avoid the matrimonial remnant counter.
In a Wells Memorial convention, 240 delegates from all industrial unions unanimously condemned Governor Eben S Draper for vetoing the eight hour bill. They urged forming a campaign committee to defeat Draper and all political enemies of the unions with slogans and unified action. E Gerry Brown and Dennis D Driscoll spoke on labor unity and past defeats.
A barn in the rear of Dunn terrace in Neponset burned last night, owned by Timothy Dunn and occupied by Martin Gaddis. Residents fled their homes with belongings as damage reached about $2000.
Tony Lavendoske, deaf and dumb, son of George Lavendoske, was struck by a car on Bussey street East Dedham tonight. He was knocked to the road, two teeth knocked out, forearm bruised, face and mouth cut, with possible concussion of the brain.
Police chase a trio of swindlers who left a long trail of victims on State Street. In New York Persch was found with 193000 in cash, mostly 1000 and 5000 bills. Authorities disclosed 300000 in Heinze pledged securities sold in Boston as part of a wide financial theft case.
New York officials suspect a Boston broker directed the transactions tied to hundreds of thousands of dollars in Heinze stock fraud. Adams acted as broker with a modest Exchange Building office, aiding exchanges in Boston and New York. Everett secured an injunction halting a stock sale, while other brokers faced losses and silent fallout among firms and attorneys.
