Unfavorable weather marred the New York Yacht Club cruise to New Bedford as Columbia edged Defender by miles after varying winds and calms. Navahoe and Vigilant led the big boats with Colonia and Gloriana winning their classes as the fleet wrapped at Wilkes Ledge buoy.

New Mast for Columbia for American Cup Defender

Twenty four billets of nickel steel forged at Bethleham ordnance plant and shipped to Lukens Steel in Coatesville for Columbia. The 12000 pound billets were produced in record time and will be rolled into a mast to aid the American cup defender in its challenge against Shamrock.

In a light drizzle and fresh northeast wind the Corinthian midsummer series third race saw Meemer take overall lead from Ashumet while Eleanor won in class two. In the boat abouts Hazard, Pirate and Tunipoo led early with Tunipoo peaking near Beverly shore. Opttsah won scratch knockabout despite gear damage, and Cyclone narrowly beat Ugly Duckling in the sixteen-foot class.

Hull Yacht Club Gala With Water Sports Extravaganza

The Hull Massachusetts Yacht Club hosts a Tuesday gala arranged by J L Amory and H J Thayer. Events include relay swimming races four per team, canoe races, blindfold dory race, water polo, water baseball, fishing landing, tilting, duck and drake, fancy diving, tub race and water horse. Water sports start at 3 30 pm. Supper served at 6 with dancing at 7 45 and evening illuminations of club house cottages and yachts.

One Mile Whitehall Boat Race Sets $100 Side Bet

Louis Reppette and Joseph Gardella race a one mile on the Charles River with a winner take all $100 side prize. Gardella is 67, Reppette 30, in a match on the river as part of a busy weekend of track and field events in New Jersey. The Metropolitan Association championships headlined by all the top sprinters and weight throwers from New York.
