German tariff quirks baffle U S and anger reformers

The New York Sun argues the tariff commission is a sham as it details German duties misapplied to American goods. Canned meats are taxed as ironware, hams as cotton goods, Emery as penkitives, cheese as silver, coats as millinery, ink as glassware, and salina waters taxed by bottle. The result is reduced American sales and strained trade relations.
