Fire Records Across Cities Report Broad Losses

In Cincinnati Ohio a fire at Race Elm and Waller streets destroyed sheds stables blacksmith shops and small manufactories plus some dwellings. Losses estimated at 40 000 with several owners insured. In New York City a fire at 69 Leonard Street damaged stock worth about 10 000. In Meriden and Hartford Connecticut a multi family dwelling burned with one resident dying. In Norwich a fire damaged Dr Chas Osgood barn at Cedar Street with 1 000 loss. In Steubenville and Pittsburgh Pennsylvania two attempts to burn Steubenville failed with total losses near 10 000.

Comptroller urges immediate levy to cover state debt interest

Charleston reports Comptroller-General Nagle sent a letter to Gov. Scott noting last session ordered a tax to pay interest on the public debt. The government is urged to collect over 81 million dollars by September 15. Scott cites excess legislative expenses as the reason for unpaid interest and pledges future tax to fund interest.

Bright four mile horse race draws crowded betting field

President Grant Visits Burlington in 19th Century Tour

President Grant and Gen Sheridan arrived in Burlington Vermont and stayed about two hours. A national salute, ringing bells, and a large crowd marked the welcome as a procession escorted the President from the boat. They later met visitors at the American Hotel before returning to Whitehall.
