Prov rains and alarmed citizens halted a two day forest fire siege along a 25 mile front north and east of Bangor toward the Canadian border. Strong efforts and anti fire measures slowed the blaze as authorities monitored the evolving front.
Tonight weary patrols monitor the area of charred tree stumps to quickly extinguish any fresh outbreaks. A sense of vigilance surrounds the scene as responders stay ready to act at a moment’s notice.
Lemuel C. Nieforth of Malden stood with a lit cigar over a gas tank as a touring car was being filled at John D. Gaskill’s Main street garage in Wakefield Greenwood. The blast scorched Mrs. Nieforth’s hair burned her hat and set the car top ablaze while bystanders and an infant in the vehicle were rescued. The fire department arrived to extinguish the flames as the car’s engine remained running.

Anthony Stenger 30 of 9 Concord Street Cambridge reports three young men halted him late last night as he walked from Divinity Field to Conant Hall. A gun was drawn, he struck the spokesman, and fled amid two shots fired that missed. Police searched Museum Street grounds but the trio vanished.
Two year old Elsie Silva, daughter of Mrs. Mary Silva of 89 Second Street Cambridge, died at Cambridge City Hospital from hydro chloric acid poisoning. Left alone at 9 pm, the child climbed to a cupboard and drank a large amount. Neighbors rushed her to East Cambridge Station and then to the hospital, where she died ten minutes after arrival.
August 7 report from Berlin via Associated Press notes American relief workers preparing to enter famine stricken Russia expect about 12 million people in the Volga basin to be starving. Miss Ruby Olson a 22 year old book keeper of Dorchester is in Beverly Hospital with concussion and possible skull fracture after a collision at Cabot and Richmond streets between an automobile driven by F A Whipple of Salem and a motorcycle. The cycle was driven by Albert Reed of Dorchester Miss Olson’s cousin and former Boston police officer.
Madrid reports that General Navarros column besieged by Moorish rebels on Mt Arruiz has been annihilated per a communication from General Berenguer the Spanish high commissioner in Morocco.
New York reports that Geraldine Farrar engineered a marriage to Tellegen after proposing herself. Jealousy dominated the union as she restricted his social contacts and even forced him off the stage. He felt imprisoned and sought freedom amid ongoing quarrels.
Lou Tellegen sought a family while his wife Geraldine valued her career and resisted visitors at their Long Beach home. She asked him to stop entertaining certain people, but he did so anyway, triggering a feud that culminated in a disastrous public breakup of the Farrar Tellegen relationship.

A couple carried on a long distance romance without letters since last May. They finally met a week ago when she visited his remote farm shack. Mrs Steadman arrived at Hotchkiss home with her youngest child Elinor aged four.
Baltimore Aug 7 Mrs Gertrude Isaacson failed to stop her daughter Frieda from marrying Abraham Mendel of Washington. Frieda, 18, was arrested after alighting from a train and the mother fainted at the police station and later at the railroad station. Mrs Isaacson had bought wedding clothes and goods totaling over 1000 dollars to set Frieda and her husband up in Boston.
A second attempt to derail a train on the circuit division of the Boston and Albany railroad occurred yesterday when a boulder was laid on the outbound tracks.
An engineer spotting boulders on inbound track near sum deep culverts halted the train with the conductor. A 20 pound stone rested on the rail amid a rock structure. Police link the act to gangs and vow full policing. past Pennsylvania Railroad wrecks are cited as motive for stopping the dangerous prank. Several suspects to be interviewed as investigations continue.
Twenty girls said to be from the Y W C A in Boston and three men set sail from Boston Harbor for Provincetown. The boat burned out bearings and disabled the craft. They tried to anchor but the cable failed to reach the bottom.
