A swift New England heat wave hit Boston yesterday with a southwest wind lifting temperatures from 68 to 90 in three hours. Ambulances clustered as people collapsed on the streets and emergency calls surged, marking a sudden urban health emergency.
Continued on page four first column the ad highlights Father John's Medicine as a tonic for children, claiming health benefits and improved strength.
Charles E. Hughes assails the administration on foreign policy and Mexico during a cross country stop. He denounces what he calls a raid on the civil service and criticizes the Vera Cruz action as an ignoble war.

Hester Levy 13, daughter of Mrs Rebecca Levy of Brooklyn, disappeared July 27 after leaving her uncle Jacob Wasserman’s Dorchester home to visit Pleasant street. Police and family have followed every clue without success as a wardrobe and suitcase also vanished.
In Westfield on August 7 two sisters Lelia May Briggs 19 and Ina Marion Briggs 17 drowned in the Westfield River. The elder tried to save the younger who had ventured beyond her depth. A 10 year old child, present with them, witnessed the accident and alerted nearby swimmers.
A fire at 69 Brighton Street in a four story tenement early this morning killed one child and forced almost twenty others to flee. Investigators suspect incendiary origin as flames swept through the building at about 1 am.
John Barnes son of Attorney J Ed gar Barnes of Lynn unearthed a human skeleton from a sand hill near his father’s camp on the Rowley River. A crushed skull and dismembered bone arrangement lead police to suspect the remains are a murder victim.
A fire at a Joy Street tenement just before 1 am killed 1 year old Esther Baron and injured others including the father Joseph Baron. Police detain a man naming himself Peter Olesky of Ohio Street. Firefighters saved the rest of the Baron family and the building suffered about $2000 in damage.
Ina and Lelia Briggs disappeared after entering deep water. efforts by bystanders and Chief Flouton's team recovered Ina at 6 30 and Lelia at 6 25. Daughters of James H Briggs, recent movers from Russell, both unable to swim.
Miss Hila Bernstein at the Sea Breeze Hotel mistakenly pressed the accelerator causing a Winthrop car to crash through a cellar window at 97 Beach Street. She escaped injury and the vehicle was wrecked.
Physicians estimating the skeleton found after a quarter century trigger memories of Anson Spiller a Rowley farmer whose disappearance 25 years ago sparked rumors of foul play. Villagers recall searches and a related disappearance of a local woman tied to an Indian spouse. Medical Examiner Bailey will determine sex and age as townsfolk view the exhibit.
The Rev. Newton M. Hall of Springfield Mass. was elected president of the Congressional Summer Conference Association at its third annual Star Island meeting. Elected as vice presidents were Irving F. Wood and E. Victor Bigelow. secretary and treasurer, John L. Sewall. auditor, G. W. Kallt. A campaign aims to raise at least $20,000 for the island’s development.
French troops launched a terrific assault on German lines along the Somme river capturing a continuous trench stretch from Hem Wood to the river. Teutons suffered heavy casualties as the French took 120 prisoners and seized 10 machine guns. Turkey and Russia activity noted elsewhere.
French forces advance on the Verdun front taking positions near the Thiaumont works and drive Germans from houses still occupied in the western part of the village of Fleury.
Margaret Wilson eldest daughter of the President Blanche Bates actress and George Creel writer and ex police commissioner were thrown from a carriage when a runaway horse bolted the shaft broke at Croton-on-the-Hudson residence of Holbrook Blinn. The women suffered serious bruises and shock treated at Ossining and Creel homes. Miss Wilson had recovered sufficiently to return home.
A one year old, Stanley C. Bursey, died in Chelsea from bacilliary dysentery linked to the Deaconess Home closure in Haverhill. Health officials say the illness is contagious, often contracted from watermelon, and isolation is being used to prevent spread.
The honeymoon of Mrs. Louise Adcock of 42 Gibbon Street Somerville ended abruptly when she fell from a car in Malden injuring her right leg while en route to meet her husband. She was taken to Malden Hospital where she remained under care.
Reports from Cross Island near Machias tell of two strange submarines off the Maine coast. Coastwise vigil extends to Halifax and St John as British authorities delay confirmation of the German merchantman Bremen and a consort.
General Nelson A Miles born in 1839 is highlighted along with the 1914 landing of British troops on French soil. The item recalls that exactly one year prior Germans occupied Praga near Warsaw, marking a dated WWI commemoration.
