Woodrow Wilson argues that America has awakened to neglected ideals and duties and faces an opportunity for constructive statesmanship. He contends that privilege and private advantage have entangled law, burdening the young, and hindering business renewal, urging decisive reform.
District Attorney Whitman has evidence to seek indictments against two high ranking police officials and a civilian employee at police headquarters. The charges relate to levying blackmail on gamblers and other illegal resort proprietors. The case ties to Jack Rose’s confession and the Becker murder indictment in the Rosenthal case.
Private detectives and a confession by Bridgie Webber provide corroborative evidence for the graft case. The district attorney believes indictments can be secured based on the new material.
Washington August 7 Senate votes 44 to 11 to keep the toll exemption for American ships in the Panama Canal bill. Debate stretched from 1 p m. to late night and the chamber adjourned without a final vote on the bill.
In the American circuit Cleveland and Boston finished tied at four when the game ended after nine innings. Detroit routed New York seven to nothing, Washington defeated Chicago ten to one, and Philadelphia beat St. Louis seven to two. In the National League Cincinnati crushed Boston eleven to three, Pittsburgh topped New York seven to two, Brooklyn edged St. Louis eight to seven, and Philadelphia won Chicago four to one. Rhode Island claims tennis victory as well.
Police raided a Tremont street newspaper crowd, arresting five men during a daily bulletin gathering on baseball scores. Separate action at 10 Province court saw 11 men jailed in a gambling raid linked to the same city precincts. The Lagrange and City Hall avenues stations coordinated the operations following prior surveillance.
A crowd at a score board alley raid led to arrests as police seized piker betting in Boston. Officers from City Hall Station arrested 15 men from the West End and Dorchester, charging being present where gambling instruments were found. The suspects included David McLean and Adolph Rottenberg among others, with arraignment set for today.
Four women and two men were injured last night in Bowdoin Street near Holliday Dorchester when an outbound Meeting House Hill car on the inbound track crashed into an inbound Franklin Street car. Outbound cars had been diverted past a derailed car at Upham's Corner, running over a short section of inbound rail. The Meeting House Hill car had run past the switch over and was making up lost time when it crashed head on into the Franklin Street car.
A collision on a steep grade left both cars with demolished fronts and shattered glass. Five passengers were aboard the vehicles when the crash occurred.
John Shaw a 67 year old Cambridge furniture merchant was named defendant in a $25000 alienation suit filed by Edward Carr for Frederick W. Cope alleging Shaw stole the affections of Cope's 27 year old wife.
Cope alleges improper actions by Shaw and Mrs. Cope in a libel suit. Shaw, former Cambridge antique shop owner, once lodged with the Cope family and now lives near them after being ejected. Mrs. Cope, Winnifred M. Smith by marriage, is described physically and as estranged.
Delegates rise as Roosevelt and Hiram Johnson are nominated by acclamation at the Coliseum. The pair will run under a platform echoing Roosevelt's declared faith as they enter to songs and a benediction, with the convention adjourned sine die at 7 24 p m.
