Why Men Are Idle Inquiries Into Industrial Idleness In Boston
The unemployment commission in Boston resumed hearings at City Hall focusing on causes of idle wage workers. machinists pattern makers and building tradesmen testified that lack of work stems from unrestrictive entry of young and foreign labor, wage declines, and outsourcing. Witnesses noted 1893 prosperity earlier that year, with rising idle rates, and cited government projects drawing work from local shops. The session highlighted immigration's impact on skilled trades and the need for policy attention to sustain local workers.
