Convicts' Bold Plan to Fire Prison Fails at Charlestown

A mass escape attempt at Charlestown State Prison nearly succeeded as inmates in the harness and shoe shops rioted, smashing machines and windows while a prisoner fired on guards. Police from multiple stations quelled the revolt within minutes, securing eighty to hundred prisoners and detaining ringleader Evans who used a loaded revolver earlier. Warden Russell calls the act a deliberate, desperate scheme aimed at opening gates during a fire to enable escape. Damages are estimated around $2000 with about 200 prisoners implicated in sympathies.
