In a volatile air of battle reports German ships reportedly head toward the Dutch coast as the channel remains contested. Admiralty withholds details while naval action intensifies across Belgium and the Mediterranean.
The Cunard liner Mauretania completed a four day crossing from Liverpool to New York and arrived in Halifax with 1670 passengers including many Americans fleeing Europe. The ship, warned by the Essex to alter course, maintained high speed under blackout as German forces hunted nearby.
British forces engage the German fleet on the high seas driving Kaiser's ships toward the Dutch coast. The Amphion sunk by a mine with 131 casualties. 22 German and six British sailors wounded in North Sea actions. Hull hospital readied for 250 wounded. Belgian resistance near Liege continues.
Reported Allied censorship notes no German battlefield details. British and German fleets reportedly clashed somewhere in the North Sea in what may be the greatest naval battle, with officials cautious to confirm or deny combat while Channel and North Sea passages are said clear.
