A Detroit Free Press item recounts Mr. F. C. Bardwell of New York paying a dentist bill after a quarrel over dental pain. Bardwell dared the doctor and was hit with a thrown umbrella. he sued and won $100, netting him $75 as a humorous punch line about dentistry.
New York August 7 The steamer State of Alabama reports that on August 4 she spoke the steamer Werra with her shaft broken and in tow by a Monarch line steamer making for Boston harbor. She reported all well on board.
In the New Orleans Times Picayune piece a critic mocks the habit of writing LL.D. after a name as vanity. It contrasts it with M.D. for physicians, noting a hospital call at night justifies the latter but not the former, which brings no practical benefit.
