The Engineer's Statement on the Burned Steamer Disaster
Engineer Mr Holmes arrived with his account of the fire near Loughrey Creek opposite the Ohio River. He described spotting cotton burning, alarm given, and the steamer drifting to a sand bar as flames consumed the cabin and hurricane deck. The pilot suspects tampering with the tiller rope or a passenger smoking, while many passengers perished or were saved after boats were lowered and attempts to reach shore. There were nearly a hundred aboard, with missing persons later seen on shore.
