Debates Over Free Coinage In 1896 Speech Contradicted
In a Boston letter dated August 4 1896 G L P argues against Mr Paine on free silver. He shows 90 cent dollars would fail to help farmers or manufacturers and would hurt wage earners and savers. He notes mortgage holders and debtors may gain, while banks and pension funds lose value. The piece critiques the idea that silver would boost exports or reduce costs of labor and warns of a credit shock if silver were widely adopted.
