The Liberal Unionists held a conference to plan how to resist the Gladstonian reaction. Letters from Henry M. Stanley note the Aruwimi Falls expedition reached June 18 with all members safe. Messages mention land ownership issues in British Columbia and local political shifts in Ontario.

Lawrence Aug 4 A general convention of the Grand Lodge Deutscher Order of Haru gari with 120 delegates from 24 lodges in Massachusetts met in Matthes Hall. The meeting reported 20 deaths in the year and a treasury surplus with $27 383 on hand. Officers elected include Gros barde Charles Pippig and gros secretary E L Messerschmidt. Evening music by Schiller Lodge quartet and dancing followed into the night.
In a Dayton Journal note about the Toledo convention Mr. Blaine's name was curiously not mentioned. The quip suggests the convention avoided sunlight, as Blaine’s mention might have caused a reaction among attendees.
A rumor from New York suggests the Commercial Cable Company may join the pool cables with a uniform rate for cabling. A source close to the Commercial camp doubts a full join but expects agreement on a per word rate deemed reasonable for all parties.
A private Liberal Unionists conference in London on August 4 discussed limiting the Gladstonian wave. Speakers blamed Home Rule energy and lack of Unionist-Conservative unity for defeats and urged militant unionist campaigning modeled after Parnellites.
Four thousand Midland railway employees vow to strike in protest at directors order to place them on time wages. Drivers and firemen on the Lancashire and Yorkshire and other lines back the Midland workers in their stand aiming to secure a full week’s wage.
Despatch from St. Thomas reports letters from Henry M. Stanley stating the expedition arrived at Aruwimi Falls on June 18, all members well, and preparations underway for the overland march.
Crown Prince Frederick William received another operation by Dr MacKenzie for a throat growth. The result was good and he returned to Cowes in excellent health with improving voice. He will delay Ems visit to try Scottish bracing air. The Queen urged Balmoral stay. An agent was sent to locate a Highlands residence.
Romer Aug 4 Twenty thousand mourners attended the funeral of Prime Minister Depretis in Stra della. King Humbert and other dignitaries sent wreaths, and no religious rites were performed as Depretis died without last sacraments.
Paris reports broad consensus to submit the Ferry-Boulanger affair to arbitration. Ferry offers to satisfy General Boulanger or accept arbitration.
Washington officials said the President will travel to Columbus and Indianapolis en route to St Louis with brief calls in each city. Marietta Deeham assigned as Boston post office inspector. Memphis delegation led by Senator Harris arrives to urge a fall visit and will be received tomorrow morning.

At Roanoxi Virginia August 4 the Democratic State convention opened with temporary and then permanent leadership praising President Cleveland. The platform endorses the administration, opposes internal revenue, favors a targeted tariff, and pledges action on debt settlement, education, labor protection, and public lands for settlers.
Early returns show the Texas Prohibition amendment defeated by about 40000 votes. Fort Worth supported the measure by 198, while other large towns rejected it as voters cast ballots amid a quiet election day with orderly polling.

Cincinnati dispatch reports Bradley leading in 76 counties with a 27 000 gain. If the 31 remaining counties follow the same pace Buckner’s plurality may fall below 4000. The per county gain for Bradley rises as more back county returns arrive. The state remains in doubt.
John Tobin, 60, was instantly killed in Worcester when he fell from a wagon loaded with six tons of wire and was run over by its wheels. An investigation into the accident is expected.
Mrs Cleveland attends a Boston hosted luncheon at Great Hill House Marion with 20 guests and elite attendees including General Greely and Joseph Jefferson. Portuano Maine August 4 One of the American Fishery Union directors says Admiral Luce helped clarify Canadian policy on fishing vessels and the word repair in the treaty. Whitten notes rumors of coercion are likely misprinted and that Luce provided information, not orders, to fishermen.
The new sloop Volunteer won her first race amid light southerly winds off New London with Puritan runner up and Mayflower following. Spectators praised the Volunteer as Burgess day celebrated aboard the fleet, while forecasts hinted at tomorrow’s tougher test along a 45 mile course from Beaver Tail to Brenton’s Light.

The Bay State Social Club of Boston held a Wood lawn picnic in Worcester that devolved into drunkenness and fights. Twenty barrels of beer were raided, a restaurant was gutted, furniture and dishes broken, and the proprietor beaten. A woman used a baseball bat to subdue rioters. one man was rescued from the lake as nineteen arrests were made.
For the next twenty four hours beginning Friday morning, August fifth, Maine through Connecticut show slightly warmer conditions with local showers this afternoon or evening and southerly winds. Eastern New York expects warmth with local thunderstorms and southerly winds, cooling by Saturday evening. Brattle Hunt Observatory notes rain for southeastern New England in the same period.

In Fall River on August 4 the Mechanics' Mill remains shut and the American Linen Company mills close indefinitely due to a spinners' strike. The Mechanics' Mill idles 550 workers and the Linen Mills 800, with other mills idle for yarn shortages, totaling over 1400 out of work. Richard Borden Mill resumes with fresners returning on better terms.
