Liberal Democrats and Greeley Brown Banner Rise in Portland

A jubilant Portland crowd celebrated North Carolina news with a large Greeley and Brown banner. Horace Greeley’s image led the banner amid gun salutes and speeches by Frank H. Houghton Col A W Bradbury and others. Gray also held a flag raising with Gen. Anderson and local speakers as Liberal enthusiasm sweeps Maine.

North Carolina Returns Show Conflicting News

Despatches to the New York Herald and Times report slow, confused returns across North Carolina. Liberals claim a 1500 to 2000 majority for their candidate while Republicans claim a similar margin. Caldwell leads the Republican vote over 1870 by about 2500, with county tallies showing gains ranging from 1550 to 2737 and remaining counties needing 2268 to overturn. The Times notes insufficient returns to assure a Republican victory, but says Democratic reports are exaggerated, acknowledging five Democratic Congressmen elected and the defeat of Settle.

Letters from Livingstone letters acknowledged by British leaders

London reports received from Stanley confirm that Viscount Enfield Earl Granville and Livingstone’s son acknowledge the letters and documents as genuine. Lieutenant Dawson, leader of the English search party, departed Zanzibar May 21 and expected in London by mid next month. In North Carolina news the Liberal victory and Sumner and Banks papers spur speculation of a Greeley Brown ticket in November. Admiral Alden and officers were hosted by the Southampton mayor at Netley Abbey ruins in a garden party marked by a brilliant success.
