Fire in Bowery tenement kills seventeen in panic

A Bowery blaze at a six story tenement adjoining People's Theatre traps occupants and kills seventeen. Dozens injured from jumps and burns as Polish Jewish tailors crowd the building. Rescue efforts by Charles Norman save many, while the cause is blamed on a kerosene stove.

Bergen to be extradited after Baltimore forger case

Three Baltimore witnesses arrived to testify against Bergen the fugitive forger. Evidence before Justice Church was directly against him. Bergen was committed for extradition and the case was sent to Ottawa for approval. If approved, the warrant will reach Tuesday and he will be taken back to Baltimore.

Races At Saratoga Racecourse Report

Small crowd at Saratoga today as Bertha B won the maiden race for three year olds over a mile. Lottie Wall took the second race by a length, with Elmira close behind in a dead heat for third. Four races described with Pat Regent and Jaubert among winners in divisions. Meadow Queen’s hurdle race ended in a fatal fall for Glenarm, jockey McBride unhurt.

Militia deploys to Stevens County Kansas border

Ten companies of the Second Regiment State militia left Hutchinson by special train for Liberal and will march to Hugoton, expected to reach Sunday. Stevens County reports say the situation is serious and open conflict may erupt. Both towns are arming for possible war. A Woodsdale man Harter and a Wicotas man Watson dueled near midway, leaving Harter seriously wounded.

Rev Percy Grant Named Successor at Grace Church Providence

The Rev Percy S Grant of Fall River is called to Grace Church Episcopal Providence to fill the vacancy left by Rev Dr David H Greer who moves to St Bartholomew's New York. Grant, 29, is a Harvard and Episcopal seminary graduate and has built missions including St Mark's Episco Chapel in Fall River. He is said to have been invited to assist Dr Brooks and Dr Greer at St Bartholomew's.
