At Crescent Park Providence the fifth annual New England Veteran Firemen's Association playout saw twelve engines compete. Aldin R. Knowles of Gaspee was injured, leg broken above the knee after a collision with a bar. Schley Narrowly Escapes Quarantine in Montevideo

Admiral Schley told the Navy Department he almost faced a twenty day quarantine with his squadron in Montevideo harbor. The South Atlantic Squadron called at Rio de Janeiro en route south when Montevideo authorities ordered quarantine for nearly a month despite no suspected cases. Schley protested and, via U.S. Minister Finch, secured release after three days in quarantine.

Balloonist John Sawyer Aboard Illness and Escape

A City Hospital patient named John Sawyer, a claimed balloonist, was admitted on Wednesday with heart trouble and placed on the dangerous list. In the afternoon he left claiming improvement after showing clippings about a 6000 foot Winnipeg balloon fall and saying his parachute failed. A woman identified as his wife visited him before he departed, and he said he had an engagement in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

Brother's Slayer Not Held After Self-Defense Claim

In Leicester Massachusetts Mrs Nora Phillips shot and killed her brother David McNamara in their home. Police court released her on manslaughter charges after District Attorney Rockwood Hoar found no criminal case. Witnesses described a fierce struggle and supported self defense.
